Co-parenting is difficult.  Even if you and your soon-to-be ex- are still friendly, you need rules of the road when sharing responsibilities for raising your kids. Sometimes agreements can be negotiated, and sometimes you might need the help of the court to make decisions for you. Don't forget that whatever agreement, order or decree is ultimately entered, you will be living with it for a very long time.

Get professional advice.  A family law attorney has the benefit of the experiences of many other families who have gone through the pain of separation - solutions you have not thought of, problems you have not anticipated.

Get help before the first order is entered.   Once an order is entered, it becomes difficult to change. You do not want to go into court time and time again from now until your youngest child is eighteen because you did not take time to make a good agreement or decree.  Custody, parent time, child support, financial arrangements relating to the children, all require attention tailored to the particular needs of your family.  A good agreement or decree will save you from unnecessary conflict due to misunderstandings and failure to address problems likely to arise in the future.

Mary Deiss Brown is a Salt Lake City-based attorney with extensive experience in family law.  Graduated from Yeshiva University in New York City in 1994, she has practiced in the areas of family law, immigration, and criminal defense. She understands the emotional nature of divorce and separation.  In representing you, she will make every attempt at a negotiated or mediated settlement, believing that people are best served when they participate in drafting their own agreements. However, in some cases, settlement is not appropriate or cannot be achieved.  In those cases, your interests will be aggressively pursued through litigation.
